Creative duo Alpha + Omega, consisting of artists Gregory Barendregt and Niké Huiberts, release their series "The Sapphic Verse" in Currant Magazine's book N°Surreal.
The series is inspired by Sappho, a famous Greek poet from the island of Lesbos, widely known for her lyrical poetry. Her work focuses on love, relationships and longing and frequently features same-sex desires — which was highly uncommon in ancient Greece at that time, especially for women. The word "sapphic" has now become a synonym for any love poem today.
"The Sapphic Verse" is set in a futuristic world, addressing the manifestation of femininity, fantasy and desire. Through reclamation and transformation, Sappho investigates the links and discrepancies between cycles of old and new.
